Do You Feel the Need for Speed?

Why DSL Internet Access
is the Way to Fly

We did a little research on the current pricing and options for Southwestern Bell's "SBC Yahoo!" DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) Internet service, which is now available in most areas of Emporia, and we were very pleasantly surprised!

First, a little bit about what DSL is.

Digital Subscriber Line service is a way of providing always on broadband (high speed) Internet access over regular copper telephone lines. The DSL service piggybacks its signal on top of the regular telephone dial tone on an existing plain old telephone service (POTS) copper wire pair. Functionally it is a service that provides Internet access that is 6 - 10 times faster than the fastest dial-up connection you can make, and it doesn't tie up a phone line. So if you wait 15 seconds for a web page to load over your dial-up connection, you would see the same page in 1.5 - 4 seconds.

Now, a little bit more about the "doesn't tie up a phone line" part. The DSL signal coexists with any voice / fax / modem traffic over a standard phone line. You could, theoretically, dial in and surf the Internet on the same line, although why you'd want to would be a mystery.

No more busy signals for people calling in, no more waiting until the line is free to send a fax or make a call.

Okay, So It Costs 6 - 10
Times as Much. Right?

Now comes the best part. You are thinking this HAS to be expensive. Well hang in there while we do the math.

(all costs are calculated on a yearly base)

Cost of a phone line reserved for
Dial-Up access
$360.00-$624.00
Cost of account with Web access
through local Internet Service Provider
$180.00-$240.00
Total cost in "Real Dollars" $540.00-$864.00
Cost of wait time downloading pages
and e-mail through Dial-Up access
$?,???.??

The Proverbial Bottom Line

SBC Yahoo! Business DSL accounts on a one year contract runs around $30.00 per month or $360.00 per year for 384 Kbps up (request speed) - 1.5 Mbps down (delivery speed) versus 21 - 53 Kbps dial-up connection speed.

IF YOU DISCONNECT A LINE DEDICATED TO DIAL-UP ACCESS AND CANCEL YOUR DIAL-UP ACCOUNT (YOU WON'T NEED IT ANYMORE) YOU'LL SAVE A MINIMUM OF $120.00 PER YEAR AND REALIZE A TIME SAVINGS OF 85% OF WHAT YOU SPEND JUST WAITING (AND WAITING) NOW!

If this interests you, give us a call and we'll take a look at your specific situation and whether it makes sense for you. If you want to see just how fast DSL is, call and come by our office and you can see for yourself.
